We love the Loggiata de Serveti four blocks north of the Duomo.which is nice quiet neighborhood and around the corner from the Academica Museum with Michelangerlo's David. The Duomo-Uffizi area is too noisy and crowded for us (AC is not so common, so open windows are).Having said that, on our summer trip around Europe last summer we relied on Booking.com and found that as long as we picked hotels rated higher than 8.5 we were fine.

9.0 hotels are common too for about the same price so start high and move down if you need to. I just checked for the third week in September and came up with 211 hotels less than 1/2 mile from the city center, up to $160/ night, and rated 9 or better. 233 were listed for the last week in September.
