I posted this on the 'How Do I.?' Section but think it was the wrong section for my question, and have some new information which I think is better suited here.I've tried uploading an 800MB.mov video twice, and both times it only plays theaudio - the screen is completely black where the video should be. Ilooked up some help topics and realised I was probably using the wrongcodec. My original video (which is too big to upload) was compressedwith the DV/DVCPRO NTSC codec.I looked up Youtube's recommendedcodecs - MPEG4, MPEG2 and H.264 and have tried compressing the originalwith those, but the video quality ends up being so poor that I can'tupload it! It also reduces the file size far beyond what is needed, to 50MB. I'musing Adobe Media Encoder (Mac) for compression. However, I downloaded MediaInfo on the recommendation of people replying to other topics, and MediaInfo tells me that, in fact, both the original.and.

the compressed file I already tried to upload are actually MPEG-4 files already. Yet it's coming up with audio only. I'm really excited about this video and want to upload it ASAP, but putting up bad quality versions just ruins all the hard work I put into it. Encoding it further blurs out faces, distorts the picture badly, and basically makes it look like a corrupted file - it's awful! What codec canI use that won't reduce the quality of the video too much?

Oralternatively, is there a way I can use something like MPEG4 but at amuch higher quality? Is there another (free) program for Mac that will encode my file better than Adobe Media Encoder? I just got a reply on the first topic I posted from someone who suggested changing the bitrate (which was greyed out before). I tried it, and it did work to an extent with a 178MB file, though the file still isn't as high quality as I'd like. I ended up pushing the bitrate slider up as high as it could go (100%), which gave me the 178MB version.

I ended up using this. However, the maximum that Adobe Media Encoder would let it go was 4500.

For some reason, it won't go any higher. Although it still isn't great quality, it's significantly better than it was before. Thank you so much for your help! Also, Media Encoder has so many different options, including H264. I tried all the recommended ones first. Funnily enough, AVC was never mentioned, so I'm not sure how it ended up as that. Certainly I never selected it. IceMage: AVC and H.264 are 2 names for the same thing.

I have no trouble with AVC that's not the result of YouTube's 2Mbps HD streaming max rate, and AVC is what Sony consistently calls the H.264 codec. They are 'industry standard' synonyms. Chances are, in fact, that MediaInfo is simply calling H.264 AVC in this case. OTOH, Apple and Adobe do prefer to call it H.264.I'm not well versed in Apple Encoder oddities, coming from PC platforms and Sony Vegas.

It may be that the max setting is to prevent a mismatch in H.264 profiles or something of the sort, particularly since at 900x600 resolution your video is just shy of qualifying as HD. Any bit rate over 4000kbps at that resolution would be mostly a waste of rendering time and effort.IceMage's comments about the abysmally low bit rate on video are spot one. You (Frostlight) may also be creating unnecessary problems by uploading uncompressed audio, though YouTube's conversion seems to create fewer obvious issues with it than it once did. I'm also concerned about the aspect ratio, but if 3:2 is what the user wants, far be it from me to argue with that choice. The only downside might be that 600 is evenly factored by 8, but not by 16, so there might be some (very) esoteric compression and block conversion issues, but not ones that most people would notice.

Video compression is the need for the day. With video formats becoming more and more advanced, the detailing has improved manifolds which have resulted in large file size. Viewing these videos on your PC, or HD TV sets is definitely an awesome experience, but when it comes to sharing and storing these files, there is a lot of struggle. So when you want to store a number of files, share them over Facebook, sent through email or play over smartphones, compressing is the solution.
